I had a very tough week. Just when I thought this week couldn’t get any worse, we received word this morning that E’s grandmother had suffered a massive stroke and was in the hospital. By the time we got there early this afternoon, she had just passed away. This death is especially hard for E, as she was his last living grandparent. His grandma had been living here in MN with E’s parents for the past two years, ever since she had a stroke that left her needing 24-hour dependent care. It is Japanese custom to take care of your elders, so it was never a question that they would take care of her. She and E’s grandpa settled in Chicago after immigrating from Japan in the early 1950′s and she lived there up until the time of her stroke. She was a wonderful lady and I am glad that I got to know her prior to the stroke…. She was there the first time I ever tried sushi and was the very first person to offer me sake. She made the first sukiyaki that I ever had (and she made it the best!) She had a great sense of humor. She also made beautiful Japanese dolls as I mentioned in my Memoirs of a Geisha post. She had three wonderful children and six beautiful grandchildren who will all miss her very much. She was a great lady. I wanted to share a few pictures in her memory :)
Rest in Peace Bacha, We Love You.

Hi there! So sorry to hear of your loss. I understand, my grandma died last year and she lived out of state. My last memory of her was a road trip to ARkansas to see her that i took with my cousin. She wasn’t in a home yet so she was able to play her favorite game of ‘Aggravation’ with us and it was time well spent. Once again, I am sorry for your loss.
