Last night in my final science and health class, our topic of discussion was teaching kids about death and grief. The professor brought in several children’s books that deal with this topic and had us read them.
This book brought a slight tear to my eye…
Its the lovely story of a boy and his dog throughout the years, until the dog is so old he passes away. It made me think about a few former pets that I have had and grieved over after they were gone, and thought it would be a good topic for TFT (although sad, I know).
I’d like to pay tribute to Romeo, my little sweetheart who died very suddenly a few years back. It was very sad for me and for the other cats, took awhile for me to accept the loss. I still don’t know if I can tell the story of his final hours without crying about it all over again :(
I invite you to share about your loss of a pet today.
Tell me about the significance of that pet in your life.
How long did you grieve?
What are some ways that you paid tribute to that special animal in your life?

Well, just recently, my childhood dog was put to sleep. He had been on steroids for many years because of a slipped disc in his back. Well, old age just caught up with him and the steroids stopped being effective. We all knew it was time. Although it was a sad loss, I know he’s no longer in pain. He gave us 10 good years and was a great dog.
Now, if my Sargie pup were to die, I’d be devastated. He is such a good dog. He’s too close to me right now, at least with Jake, I didn’t live with him anymore. I still am sad that he’s not with us, but the wounds have healed. A pet, in my mind, becomes family whether Jeffy wants to believe it or not. We care for them, we feed them, give them love, they love us. It’s hard saying goodbye. Good topic!

good post. we lost 2 cats in 2 years and it was very difficult. i was pregnant both times which i think made it more emotional. they are buried in our back yard with flowers over them. i did get rather nervous this summer when my grandmother gave the boys gardening tools that they would dig them up…

I have a cat right now and cannot imagine ever losing her. She is definitely a very important part of my life and seems more like my child instead of my pet. I am Sorry for your loss!

I had my cat Chase die in a fire back in 2000. I resent the firefighters for just standing there and watching it happen to this day. (He was in the window but they wouldn’t save him.)
My youngest son is named Chase because, for some reason, while I was sedated after the c-section it seemed to be the perfect name for him. 2 days later, when I received his birth Certificate, I didn’t change it. ;)
