With summer and a much smaller income approaching, I have been thinking about ways that I can save money this summer on food. The amount we spend each month on food is somewhere near ridiculous. Seriously. So my goal is to spend no more than $100 a week on food. I told a friend of mine this and she was like, "whoa! That is still a lot of money" Is it??? It is a lot less than what we spend now! It costs quite a bit of money to eat like royalty and its no secret that E and I like to eat.
I know this same topic must be on other people's minds too, as I saw Zoe and Elizabeth both post about ways to save money on groceries, etc.
I know this seems nosy, but can I ask how much you think you spend on groceries per week? (Please tell me how many people you are feeding on that $$). Do you use coupons? Shop for sale items, generic brands, etc? How often do you go out to eat?

With family of five….lol I’d ball park around $700-$800 a month. With summer here now and the kids being out of school and home all day it is bound to go up. I use coupons and shop sales but we don’t eat out that often. Maybe once every month, or on special occasions.

I think its about to come to this… http://www.mattfischer.com/ramen/ (if you don’t want to click it’s a page where users submit their ramen noodle concoctions) … There are a ton of other resources for ramen noodle recipes and the fact remains you can get like 10,000 packages for 5 bucks is awesome…

We try to spend an average of $100/week here… its just Me, Ry and Porter eating. Some weeks we spend a little more, some we spend less. It just depends on what we’re out of. I do cut coupons, although we don’t have very many in our weekly ads. I also check the sale ads every Sunday and map out some meals for the week using sale items (same goes for snacks etc).

Helmet kills me! what a Dork!
Anyway, I have no idea what we spend on groceries but I know that it is a lot! I need to keep better track of this and put us on a budget.
I do know that when I shop off of sales adds, I save a ton of money and when I make a weekly dinner menu and shopping list I save a ton. I just need to stop being lazy and do those things.
I am going to check out the ramen noodle site though my husband loves those.

We spend a LOT on food. We go to Sam’s Club once or twice a month and spend between $200 and $400. That takes care of our snacks & meats for about a month: chicken, steaks, ground beef, salmon… then I’m at Jewel about once a week or less and I spend around $20-$50 depending on what we need. I stopped eating out for lunches so that saves us a little, and Kev is bringing his lunch everyday. We have been trying not to eat out, but if we’re too busy to cook, we end up eating out… That’s prob about 1-2 times a week. We have been trying to budget ourselves, but I’m afraid to look at the numbers I have recorded for our spendings on food…. let alone my daily Starbucks addiction!

We spend probably close to $100/week feeding a family of 4 (though the kids often out-eat me!) I clip coupons and try to buy in bulk – which offsets the money that I spend buying fresh fruits and vegetables and buying organic. Like Jessica, I try to limit eating out to lunch and to someplace where we have a coupon (and with kids, we don’t generally try to go anyplace fancy.) I have found that meal planning seems to help tremendously with my food budget – sitting down and figuring out what our meals are going to be for the week helps me use what I have on hand more efficiently and also helps me to branch out a bit more on what I prepare.

Brent and I spend about 150/wk on gorceries and eating out combined. We usually go to the store once a week and get dinner for at least 4-5 days of the week and then the we eat out the remaining days. We also bring our lunches to work or at least Brent does. I sometimes get subway a few times a week.
In a week that may have stuff going on like dinner with friends it might bump it up to 200/wk.

I go shopping about every 2 weeks and it usually ends up being $150-$175. So I’m sure its about $100 a week. And thats for Tony, Lukas and I. We do eat out A LOT though! Soooo, I’m guessing we spend another $25-50 a week on that too.

I do try to shop sales, just when Im inthe store, but usually just end up buying the same things every two weeks for meals. And buying the staples when they are on sale.

I spend no more than $30 a week on groceries. To feed all four of us. We don’t eat out much, when we do it’s usually just lunch…maybe once a week.
I gave myself a goal a while ago to cut out excess spending, only buy what we’ll eat, only buy what’s on sale, etc. It’s hard at first, but now I have it down and it’s incredible how much we used to spend…and waste.
Every Sunday we sit down with the coupons from the paper and our local store ad. We map out a meal for every night using only what’s on sale, or what we can use a coupon for. We still eat lots of fresh stuff, and we even can afford to get quite a few snack type things as well. I thought I was a pretty good shopper, but I’ve made myself be even better, and it’s actually gotten pretty easy and even fun! :-)

I’d guess we spend $75 a week on groceries. With a trip to Costco thrown in there about once a month, putting the monthly total at probably close to $400. That’s for four of us. And Ryan packs a lunch to take to work every day.
I’m spending more than I used to spend because I’m trying to move farther and farther away from lots of processed stuff and get more healthy/organic versions and lots of fresh fruits and vegetables. I hate that eating healthier costs so much!!

I have been trying to make changes in the with respect to grocery shopping. We are now spending about $150 a week for the 4 of us & my nephew. I have made changes in the last month to get it to here. I would like to shave it down a bit more, but I am trying to be realistic. I have to keep in mind that I am feeding boys!!!

Ugh, food shopping! I wish I were better at saving in this department! it’s hard to say exactly how much I spend per week as it fluctuates. Some weeks we eat out more than others or some weeks I’m making food for gatherings or something for work. On average I’d say I spend around $500/mo. on food shopping for me, my husband, and little boy. That includes the wholesale items such as paper towels, diapers, tiolet paper, etc. etc. I do try to cut coupons and use them as much as possible.
I do know that when I take the time to plan ahead and come up with meal plans, I save more.
