A Letter to Sebastian on His 1st Birthday

A Letter to Sebastian on His 1st Birthday

Dear Sebastian,

Happy Birthday Bashy Bear! How can it be that you are already one year old? This past year has flown by faster than ever.  You have grown from a little peanut who was not quite 8 lbs to a squirmy little monkey of 22 lbs! There are so many words I could use to describe you: sweet, happy, curious, lovable, smart, problem-solver, tolerant of your big brother, lover of outdoors, observant, and talkative, just to name a few.

The joy you bring to me every day is so precious.  While I already miss  how tiny you were as a little baby, I hold those memories so close to my heart.  I am thankful that I had the foresight to catch a few moments of you on video every day since you were born.  As I look back at those moments, my heart swells with love.  I hope you appreciate these videos as you look back at yourself and your brother growing up together.  You both mean the world to me.

At one years old you are such a great eater.  You love to try new things and love to eat meat, especially chicken. You kind of skipped over the baby-food stage, preferring the foods that we all eat instead. You still drink a bottle but are at the very tail-end of getting breastmilk.  Mama made it the entire year of supplying breastmilk to you, you lucky boy.

You love your blankie and your stuffed cow, Bessie.  Elmo also puts a huge smile on your face. Whenever you see a stuffed animal, you always hold it close to your face and give it a hug.  It is pretty adorable.  You have also been watching your brother Bretton play with trains and cars and want in on the action! It is so cute to see you try to make the cars “go”.  You and Bretton are already fighting over toys! I didn’t think I’d have to worry about that so soon but you always want to play with the toys he is playing with, and vice-versa.  Bretton has been learning to share with you and soon I hope you also learn how to share.

Sebastian, I have no doubt how smart you are already.  You understand so much of what we say to you and already you can follow simple directions.  You are also starting to say some words.  You have been saying “Dada” for months now, trying to get you to say Mama too! I have heard you say “ball” ,”ama”(grandma), and a few other words that sound close to what you’re trying to say (all done, car).

You have been mobile for several months now, crawling since 7 or 8 months and cruising the furniture ever since.  You have no fear on the stairs and climb all over pretty much everything.  You are truly a monkey! You are now taking steps at a fast pace and I am sure you will be walking on your own within the next week, the exact same age Bretton was when he started walking on his own.

I might be biased, but you are one CUTE little kid! We get stopped by strangers quite often who tell us how adorable you are.  Your best feature these days? Your HAIR.  It is fuzzy and sticks straight up and is cute as can be.  You get more comments on your hair, Bashy!! So who do you look more like? Mommy or Daddy? That is a toss-up, it depends on who you ask.  I think you looked more like my side of the family when you were really little but you are reminding me more of Daddy as you get bigger.  I can’t help it but I have always said you remind me of my favorite animal, a baby orangutan.  I mean that in the most adoring way.  Your big, closely-set brown eyes, your fuzzy hair, the way you cling to me, and your monkey-like climbing skills are all the signs.  You are much more adorable than an orangutan though 😉

Bash, I hope you know how much I love you.  You will always be my baby and I promise to continue to look out for you.  You are going to grow up to be such an amazing person!

Love you with all my heart,

Mom

A Letter to Bretton on his 2nd Birthday

A Letter to Bretton on his 2nd Birthday

Dear Bretton,

Happy Birthday Baby! I find myself in somewhat of a mix of emotions today on your 2nd birthday. While the past two years have gone so fast, I also feel like I have known you for so much longer than 730 days.  I have come to terms with the fact that you are growing up, but a few nights ago we watched the video together that I made of your first year and it made me choke up just a little. Every stage has gone so fast and you have learned so much in such a short amount of time.   I am so happy and proud that I have been documenting your life in this way.  I hope you see this as a gift as you grow up.  It is fun to see you watching the videos of yourself.  At 2yo you already show such a wide range of emotions just watching the videos.  Sometimes you cry when you see yourself as a baby, other times you crack up at seeing yourself act silly.

How fast the time has gone amazes me!  Bretton, YOU amaze me.  Every. Single.Day. You.Amaze.Me.  For such a young little guy, you already seem to know so much.  Every day your vocabulary and the things you demonstrate you know get bigger and bigger.  Most of the time I think you must have a photographic memory because you never forget anything, even things you saw only once 6 months ago.  The other day I took you to see Dr Cook for your check up and even though you hadn’t seen him in half a year, when he walked by you pointed at him and said, “Doc Cook!” Sometimes your curiosity and boredom leads you to get in trouble.  This is par for the course, I know, but that doesn’t make it any less frustrating at times. You are very persistent and stubborn, Bretton.  I am happy that you are responding well to “time out” and starting to learn the consequences of your behavior.  You love to make mama happy.  We get along so much better when you do 😉

You love your Daddy sooooo much.  You are his little mini-me.  You impersonate him quite well and think he is pretty cool. You are a lucky boy to be able to stay home with Daddy all day while I am at work.  I am so thankful for this.  He does a great job taking care of you and I see that the two of you will be very close.  Daddy cannot wait to take you fishing as soon as you are big enough.  We will be spending a lot of time at the lake this summer!

You are a great big brother to Sebastian (most of the time!).  You love to act silly around him and make him laugh.  He thinks you’re hilarious! You also look out for him and make sure he is never left behind.  I see a friendship growing between you and my hope is that you stay best friends. Sometimes I see you get jealous of him but you are always quick to apologize and give him a ton of kisses (“Sorry baby! kiss kiss kiss”).  You call him “Sebashy Baby” in your adorable little voice and my heart melts a little each time.

You also have a very special relationship with Grandma and Grandpa.  You have been spending one day a week with them since you were a little baby.  You call out “Grandpa!” as soon as we pull in the driveway each week and wait for him to come and get you out of your seat. Immediately you ask him for either “bubbles, basketball or balloons”.  Grandma is also one of your best buddies. She is so patient with you, reads with you, and teaches you all sorts of new things.  You love to help her make coffee in the morning and watch her cook.  She also buys you new clothes when you need them and cuts your hair once a month.  You are one lucky boy to have such a thoughtful and special Grandma in your life.  You also love your Obachan (Grandma Judy) and Ojichan (Grandpa Dennis).  You haven’t been able to spend time with them over the past several months because Ojichan was in the hospital and Obachan was helping to take care of him.  You and your brother have given Ojichan a big reason to hold on.  They are both so proud of you!

You also love being around other kids.  You adore your cousins, especially Bianca who really watches out for you and is so patient with you.  You do not seem to be intimidated what-so-ever by any kid of any size.  I think you think you’re bigger than you are! You make friends wherever you go and are never shy to go give a random stranger a hug.  That scares me about you because a child as special and as cute as you are would probably go away with anyone.  This makes me afraid of someone stealing you! I hope you are soon able to understand the concept of “stranger danger”.

Your favorite things on your second birthday are 1. Anything related to basketball- not only do you love to play but you also love to wear basketball shirts and warm-up suits.  You get so excited when basketball is on TV and you have even been to your first Timberwolves game to see KG come home to MN  2. Elmo- you have 3 Elmo dolls and a number of other Elmo toys, books, Pajamas, etc.  You also love to watch Elmo on Sesame Street.  Your cake this year was Elmo  3. Trucks- You have recently become more interested in trucks, especially hanging out in the bed of Daddy’s truck.  You also love Firetrucks.  4. Broom/mop/vacuum- you became interested in the vacuum after watching us clean up the hundreds of messes you make.  You would vacuum the entire house all day long if we let you.  Instead you are satisfied playing with the miniature broom and mop that Uncle Brian and Auntie Michelle got you for your birthday this year  5. Balloons- even though you are a master, you are kind of “over” your love of punch balloons.  You do, however, still love helium balloons.  Too bad you have delibertaely popped four of them in the past two days by biting them.  Why do you do that?! 6. Books- current favorites are counting books, animal books and color books.  You are getting so smart at identifying and naming these things.  You’re so smart, Bretton!  7. AirBuddies movies- recently you have been able to sit for long periods of time and actually watch a movie.  You love watching the adventurous puppies in the Air Buddies series.

You are a good eater; some of your favorite foods currently are Chinese food, pizza, french fries, onion rings, yogurt, blueberries, bananas, cheese, hot dogs, nuts, macaroni and cheese, honey nut cheerios, and milk.  You are not always willing to try new things and sometimes textures seem to bug you, but you have a good appetite for the things that taste best to you 😉  You are finally able to drink cow’s milk without getting a tummy ache, but the habit and comfort of your “baba” have made it hard for you to give it up.  You are growing out of the high chair and have been doing a great job of sitting in a booster seat when we go out to eat.

This letter has already become longer than I had intended but I have so much to say about you.  There just aren’t enough words to express the deep love I feel for you in my heart.  I would do anything for you, Bretton.  You (and your brother) are the loves of my life and I will continue to do my best to see that we raise you to be a polite, kind, smart, ambitious young man.  You are well on your way!

I love you soooooo much, Bretton!

Love,

Mommy

Sebastian’s Birth Story

Sebastian’s Birth Story

My sweet little Sebastian came into the world later than he was expected.  I suspect the due dates may have been incorrect, but since we went by my lmp, he was due on October 2nd.  I had been having some braxton hicks contractions for the last month of my pregnancy, but nothing that was worrisome or led me to believe I was in labor…. not until Thursday, October 2nd, his due date.  I was at work teaching science when I started having strong, debilitating contractions.  I thought, “this must be it!” but wasn’t sure what natural labor felt like since I had been induced with Bretton.  I decided it was probably in my best interest to leave work at lunchtime, so I called Erick and my mom to let them know.  I also called Joan, my long-term sub teacher and let her know that my maternity leave was about to begin and I would need her to cover for me the next day.  My mom met me at my house and took Bretton back home with her.  In the meantime, I packed my bag and Erick took me down to United.  Unfortunately by the time we got there the contractions had slowed down and not much was happening so I was sent home from labor & delivery.  I was extremely bummed because not only was I ready to meet my baby, but now my six short weeks of maternity leave had started and I had no baby to show for it!!

That weekend I took several long walks at the mall, rubbed essential oils all over my tummy, pumped, you name it….. all in an effort to get labor started.  No such luck.  On Monday, when I was 4 days past due, I had my final OB check with Dr Larsen.  I was in tears as I begged her to induce me.  I wanted my baby and I didn’t want to wait another day.  I felt I was wasting away my sweet, precious maternity time.  She told me that they could not start an induction until I hit 41 weeks later that week, so we scheduled it for Thursday morning when she was scheduled to be at the hospital.

So Thursday, October 9th, I went back to United at around 9am.  I was only dilated 1cm, which had been the case for weeks without change.  At around noon Dr Larsen decided to give me Cervidil, a suppository inserted near my cervix to help ripen it.  This medication can be used for up to 12 hours and can be pulled at any time if things start to progress.  My Dr felt it would be best to go this route before using pitocin, the drug that induces the strong, painful contractions.  So I got the cervidil and then waited and waited for things to start to pick up.  It was a long wait! This baby and my body just weren’t quite ready. Finally the contractions started to pick up after 8pm but all exams indicated I had not dilated any further than 1cm.. Very frustrating! One bonus is that they moved me from a  small room to a nice big birthing room at around 10 pm that night.

At midnight the nurse came to check my cervix again.  It had been 12 hours since the cervidil had been inserted (max amount of time), so she removed that and let me know that my cervix was unchanged at 1cm.  I figured I was in for the long haul at this point but just five minutes after she did this, I felt a huge gush and realized my water broke! Things progressed faster after that.  I believe that is when they started the pitocin to pick up the contractions.  Any woman who has had pitocin knows this stuff is no joke! Like wowzers! Ouchie.  I was trying hard to do this birth without an epidural but I was keeping my options open.  They gave me some kind of non-narcotic to relax me and help me get some sleep before active labor kicked in.  The meds were like a strong anti-histamine.  Unfortunately I was unable to get any quality sleep, partially because I was so dang uncomfortable as my contractions picked up, but also because the pump on my IV was defective and would start beeping like crazy every 5-10 minutes.  So the nurses had to keep coming to try to fix it.  Every time it would seem like it was fixed, they would leave and it would start beeping again a few minutes later.  It did this all dang night long.  So annoying!!  My mind was so tired from the antihistamine but my body was contracting so hard.  I am pretty sure I moaned and groaned in my sleep for the next 6 hours.

At 6am or so I was begging the nurse to order the epidural.  I didn’t think my body could take the pain of contractions any longer! I had been at the hospital for 21 hours at this point.  For whatever reason the nurse didn’t think I was ready for an epidural but I don’t think she checked my cervix either.  I was given a narcotic shortly after 6am but continued to have intense contractions.  I begged again for an epidural because the pain meds couldn’t even touch the pain of the contractions.  Man oh man! A team of nurses came in and I agreed to let a (male) student nurse insert my catheter.  Shortly thereafter the anesthesiologist came in and gave me the epidural. Relief!! I was finally able to get a few hours of sleep after a miserable night.  I could still feel the contractions with the epidural but the pain wasn’t nearly as bad.  At around 10:10am on 10/10/14 I woke up and could feel a lot of pressure down below.  I had the urge to push already so I called my nurse to let her know.  She checked my cervix and sure enough, I was finally dilated to 10cm and was indeed ready to push! Like with Bretton’s birth, at this point I asked the nurse and Dr to STOP the epidural.  I wanted it out of my system so that I could feel the contractions again and know when to push.  It didn’t take very long or a whole lot of pushing because by 10:52am, my sweet baby came out after about 4-5 good pushes. Hooray!!

He was beautiful and seemed so tiny compared to his big brother….

7 lbs 13 oz and 21″ long.

Welcome to the world, Sebastian Masato!

Happy Birthday Mom!

Happy Birthday Mom!

I wanted to wish a very Happy Birthday to one of the most special women I know, MY MOM!! Grandma and Bretton on Mother's Day

Besides being a multi-talented woman who can figure anything out, she is a compassionate and understanding woman who would do anything for her family.  She is the best grandma you could ask for and is sooooo good with Bretton (and Annika, Bianca and Bennett).  We are so fortunate that she ( and my Dad) watch Bretton one day a week and sometimes two when we are really in a bind.

Mom, I love you so much and appreciate everything you do for us.  Hope you have a great birthday!! Erick, Bretton and I want to take you out for dinner soon 😉

Oh Spring, Where Art Thou??

Oh Spring, Where Art Thou??

According to science and Mother Nature, today is the first day of Spring.  Sure doesn’t feel like it around here with a local temp of 6′ and windchills below zero. Boo!!! What a complete 180′ from last year at this time when all the snow was long gone and the ice was rapidly melting from the lakes.  Some days in the 70’s.

Today also marks one month from our due date which means baby Bretton could make his appearance anytime now!! No signs of labor or anything at this point and overall I am feeling pretty good.  This week we have parent-teacher conferences in the evening at school and then next week is our Spring Break.  Erick and I have been working hard to get our upstairs ready for the baby…… the nursery should be painted this weekend and then I can spend all of next week putting it together.  We have so much stuff!!!  Right now our basement is overflowing with all sorts of baby goodies. People have been so generous and I had the best baby shower ever last weekend. I promise I will blog about that soon!
Baby stuff taking over our basement!!

Another Year in the Books {6×6 to be exact}

Another Year in the Books {6×6 to be exact}

It was my birthday yesterday (Monday) and it may have been the most ho-hum birthday I’ve had to date.  Is this part of getting old??!!  We had talked about going out of town for the weekend but I wasn’t feeling all that well on Friday or Saturday and  on Sunday we were hit with freezing rain and snow which really made  me reluctant to leave my house.  Then I was up half the night on Sunday with insomnia and a killer headache, and the headache stayed with me ALL DAY on my birthday, up until I went to  bed.  I’ve been fortunate not to have really had more than a couple of bad headaches throughout this pregnancy and then I am plagued with one on my birthday.  Go figure.  I also woke up to snow and terrible roads from the previous 24 hours of winter storms.  On a Monday.  A recipe for a winning day 😉

Anyway, despite that, I still had a nice birthday.  Tons of Facebook wishes, a few texts, and calls from my parents and grandparents who are all many miles away.  Work was mostly business as usual, since I didn’t tell anyone it was my birthday, although some of my students remembered and made it more special for me.  Its nice to feel the love and I appreciate all the gestures.  I kindly thank you 😉

My sweetie was willing to take me anywhere for my birthday dinner and I just didn’t feel like doing much last night.  Every other year we usually go to a new fancy restaurant with out neighbors but this year I opted to dine at a local place and had my favorite lobster mac & cheese and then spent the rest of the night watching TV at home.  I’m hoping that we can go somewhere else in the next week or so if it works out.  Of course I woke up today feeling fine. WTF?!!

And that is how I spent my 36th birthday.

Special Birthday

Special Birthday

Another Birthday Together
Your birthday marks another year together;
Such happy times, I couldn’t ask for more,
Spending precious minutes, hours and days
With you, my love, whom I cherish and adore.
We’ve shared so much, we two, in love and friendship;
Each year our bond just seems to grow and grow.
I always want to be right next to you;
To be with you means more than you can know.
You’re always there for me with a loving smile;
I’m never happier than when I know you’re near.
I thought my love for you could not grow stronger;
And yet I love you even more this year.

Happy Birthday My Love
My love, I wish you a happy birthday,
But it’s me who has been blessed,
For I got to spend the year with you,
In our comfy, cozy nest.
You are a rare and beautiful person;
You have delightful attributes,
Like competence and intelligence,
And what’s more, lots of cutes!
You have mental strength and character
To guide you on your way;
People sense this strength in you,
And care about what you say.
So let’s celebrate your birthday,
Because without it I’d never have met
My darling, wonderful you,
The best thing that’s happened to me yet!

My neighbor, Darrell, was born on Christmas Day.  Black Baby Jesus!! lol Every year on Christmas night he and Denise throw a birthday party at their house and invite a bunch of friends and family.  This year was extra special because Darrell turned 40!

Happy Birthday to my friend Ang who turns the BIG 3-0 today!

I know I am posting this super late but I literally have not sat down since 6am this morning (its now 10) and that has been the story of my my life every day this week.  Anyway, I wanted to wish Ang a happy birthday once again (besides the text msg and FB message).  You only turn 30 once, right? (although Ang celebrates for the entire month of December! lol)

Last night I met the Birthday Girl and Dana and Heather out for dinner at a place that none of us had tried before, Brick’s Pub.  I will add my review once I get a chance to write it.  We had a great time talking, eating and sipping a cocktail or two.  We even got a few photos.

Last night Ang and I were trying to figure out which year it was that we met.  Today I have the answer.  It was December 2003!! Know how I know? Well, we met through our mutual friend, Rich, and I took this photo of the two of them at XFest back on May 30, 2004.  So Ang, I guess that means this month is our 8th Anniversary 😉 wow, how about that? You were just a kid back then. lmao!

Hope you have a wonderful time at your shindig tonight!

It is hard to believe that six years have passed since that hot July day when this sweet, baby girl was born and made me an Auntie.  (Even harder to believe I was blogging back then and captured it here)

I was really into making collages back then 🙂

Happy Birthday Annika, Sweetie! I hope you have a very special day!

Happy Birthday to Me. Could I really be 33??

Happy Birthday to Me. Could I really be 33??

Where has the time gone?  Surely there is no way that when I woke up this morning I turned yet another year older??!!!

I think I almost cried for a second when I typed my real age in the title but now  I am over it…..  I think it sounds scarier than it feels because really, I do not feel any older than I did 5 years ago.

There have been a few years that I was lucky enough to take a day off of work.  Not so lucky this year.  Actually, the past few weeks at work have been busier than ever, too much to do to take a day off.

I have dinner plans with some of my dearest friends tonight; a quiet homemade dinner is exactly what I want.  That’s about it.  Also going to celebrate with my BFFs next weekend when Kimmy hosts a brunch in my honor.  Looking forward to it!

As always, I appreciate everyone who is in my life…… whether we are family, friends, colleagues, blogging buddies or whatever.  I love you guys!
