I have been a “Big Sister” my whole life (since I was 2, anyway!). Brian was born just after I turned two and Jeff was born when I was four.  I think it is awesome that we are all close in age ;)

How do I feel about my baby brother turning 30? Makes me feel kinda old but I am also very proud.

Brian and I could tell a lot of embarrassing stories about Jeff but I wouldn’t want to embarrass him on his big birthday, would I? Sure I would…  but he would get me back and I am sure he has plenty of embarrassing stories to tell about me too ;)

I distinctly remember the day Jeff was born.  My Gram came to pick me up from school at Oak Hill Montessori and told me the big news, I had a new brother! I remember being slightly disappointed that the sister I had been wanting turned out to be a new brother but I was very excited to meet him.  He was pretty darn sweet so I guess we decided to keep him! Before visiting him at the hospital, my aunt Carol french-braided my hair and I wore my favorite periwinkle-colored dress.

Jeff was one of the cutest kids with his white-blonde curly Jeff-fro.

How cute is he?

I don’t have any pictures handy of Jeff as a teenager (I was away at college) but here are several posts/photos of different Family Gatherings that Jeff was likely a part of if you’d like to take a look back ;)

…… and now 30 years later he is a partner in a successful company, has traveled all over the world and is engaged to marry Amanda sometime next year.

Not bad for 30 years young :)

Happy Birthday Jeffrey, I am very proud of you.  I hope you have a very happy birthday!

ETA: Jeff blogged this morning about turning 30 so head on over to his blog and wish him a Happy Dirty Thirty! lol

Have you ever seen or heard of Cinemagraphs? They are basically still photographs that have bits of movement throughout the image. I don’t know who invented these but holy smokes….

Check these out:

How cool is that?

There is an article at Web Urbanist that explains it really well and has several examples to look at, such as the images shown above.  There is also a group devoted to Cinemagraphs on Flickr, you should check out the cool images.  These images are very complicated to make and time consuming, something I would love to learn how to do.  I am mesmerized by these images, this idea is so new to me that I need to do a lot more research about it.  Super cool!

My guy and I had originally planned to head up to the North Shore last weekend with a big group of friends but for obvious reasons we stayed home instead.  Since I was in town for the weekend,  I was able to meet up with some of my girlfriends on Sunday for lunch at CRAVE.  It was such a nice day out; sunny and warm.  Getting out and spending time with these ladies really helped to lift my spirits.

Not to mention my food was pretty awesome.  I had the Huevos Rancheros (made unlike any other I have tried).  I could eat this every weekend.

I have been blogging for 6 years (but have had a personal website for 11 years) and I might be a bit guilty of a few of these (highlighted in magenta)…..

1. You speak in code. (My guy HATES this!)

2. Your twitter account links to your blog, which links to your tumblr account which links to your flickr account. (Not exactly that order but connected between my blog, Facebook and Twitter)

3. You are surprised when someone asks how you are doing. Don’t they read your blog? Haha!

4. You’ve ever wrote a post titled “Things Every Blogger Should Know“.

5. You count introducing your boyfriend/girlfriend to your blog as a significant relationship milestone. (6 years of blogging and I still haven’t officially introduced him, nor will that ever happen.  Unlike me he is very private)

6. You know the difference between a tag and a category.

7. You’ve spent way too long thinking of the perfect word.  And have lost sleep when you didn’t find it. (Never struggled with a word but i struggle with titles all the time!)

8.  You are addicted to pinterestetsyheartsy (!), regretsy or dropbox.

9. Steve Jobs is your personal Jesus. (Once you go Mac you never go back)

10.  You would shank your grandmother for a book deal.

11. You have ever taken pictures of your food. Boy do I ever!!!

12. Your first thought when you get a picture taken with any large mascot is “Yes! This is going on the blog”. (I definitely have mascot pics on this blog! lol)

13. You followed @shitmydadsays before it became a television show.

14. You could perfectly replicate the header of your top 5 favourite blogs but struggle to remember your home address. (I doubt I could ever forget sweetsauer.com!)

15. You are signed up for this.

Original is here.

My heart is broken in a million little pieces and I am more sad than I have been on a very long time.

Yesterday morning we said goodbye to our little abyssinian, Pharaoh, who became sick over the weekend and went into a coma after complete organ failure (specifically liver and kidneys).  It was a rapid, unexpected decline that we were not prepared for.  We were with him when he died which is somewhat comforting, although it was devastating and horrible to watch.

It has been a very difficult couple of days with Pharaoh following a difficult couple of weeks dealing with both my Gramps and my other beloved kitty, Dusty, who were both on their death beds last week.  Never did I expect it to be Pharaoh that we would be saying goodbye to this soon.  He was only 8 years old.

I will be back with many fun and naughty stories and photos of this incredibly sweet, one-of-a-kind kitty when I can type about it without getting a flood of tears all over my computer.

There is a huge void in our home and a hole in our hearts as we mourn our loss.

I just can’t believe he isn’t around anymore, he was such a noticeable and vocal part of our household.  Everywhere we turn there are reminders of our sweet boy…..

Pharaoh, I hope you have found peace in Kitty Heaven.
We will forever miss you.

You were more than “just a cat”, you were our pride and joy.

Hockey is kind of a BFD around these parts, and they start them young!!!

Two of my friends from HS (Kelly and Peter) who came from hockey families have now started their own little hockey family and asked me to come over and get some shots of the boys skating on their backyard rink.  You may remember that I took photos of the boys last autumn as well.  These were taken some time in January but I am obviously just getting to posting them now……

So yes, I have been in a funk.

I was feeling slightly better after catching up on sleep and taking it easy this past weekend.

Then I get word Monday morning (yesterday) that my Gramps had another stroke (the first was a few months ago) and was in the Mayo in Scottsdale near where he lives.  There is nothing worse than that helpless feeling, and being far away from him and many of my family members.  After fearing the worst all day (it didn’t sound good) I was encouraged to hear that Gramps was conscious last night and was visiting with my aunt and Gram whom passed on his message that he loved all of us.

I am trying to be strong but the truth is that I am very sad.  I haven’t had to deal with death of those close to me very often. I can be an emotional wreck at times.

I have also been very sad lately because my cat Dusty, is also on his death bed.  He is 16 1/2 years old and has gone from 12lbs to just 6lbs in a matter of months.  He has a bad tooth and is now eating only soft foods.  I have to make sure it is all mushy before I feed him.  I swear he is hanging on just for me, he loves me that much.  There has never been a more loyal cat in the history of time.  Anyone who has seen me with Dusty can testify this is true.

Dumb as it must sound, I see a lot of parallels between Dusty and my Gramps.  I am already mourning the loss of both of them, premature as it may be.  Getting my mind set to let go when the time comes.

I really wish I were in Arizona right now.

Several other major disappointments lately have not helped to improve morale but I am hanging in there.  Shake it off and move forward.

Sorry for the Debbie Downer blog post

Thanks for any positivity that you can send my way!

Thanks for reading, have a great day ;)

Good grief…..

I just looked at this blog for the first time in weeks (or so it seems) and I see that this is only the fourth post in the whole month of February.

I love you guys, I really do.

Its just that I am in a funk, caused by being overworked and sleep deprived,  and perhaps because I am Vit D deficient??!!

The truth is all of the above but also because I hate blogging without photos.

Want to see the only photo I have edited this month that wasn’t food-related?

I have taken a few other photos but I haven’t even looked at them let alone editing.

Hopefully this funk of mine will be short-lived.  I hate feeling the way I have been feeling.

Be back soon?!  I hope so!

Thanks for reading, have a great day ;)

Hello there, blogging peeps.  Have you forgotten about me since I have practically fallen from the blogging sphere?  I haven’t forgotten you, I promise!

Just Busy, Busy, Busy.  I started this post 10 days ago and never got around to finishing it.

I hate that overwhelming feeling that you have too much to do and not enough time to do it all.  Something’s got to give.  First on  that list is the Photo Hunt Challenges.  I passed the buck to another hostess because I haven’t had the time or desire to work on it for several months now.

Anyway, here are some random things I have been too busy to blog about lately

  • It has been the LONGEST WINTER EVER.  I am so sick of the cold and all the snow, I am just dying to go somewhere warm.  If I could, I would leave tomorrow!!! My parents just got back from a  2 1/2 week Panama Canal cruise.  I am uber jealous!! I have no plans to go anywhere this year.
  • Have been reading a lot because this is the only time I feel relaxed.  It is something I make time for in order to keep my sanity. These are all the books I have read in the past 6 weeks: The Kite Runner, Middlesex, The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo, Shadowland & Dark Flame (#3-4 in Immortals series), Extremely loud and Incredibly Close.  Currently reading The Girl Who Played with Fire.
  • My birthday is tomorrow.  My man is taking me out for a fancy dinner at Heartland, the #1 restaurant in the Twin Cities.  We have had these plans for quite some time now, you have to make reservations well in advance.  Celebrating with my family on Sunday.
  • I did my taxes last weekend, just waiting for the 14th for the IRS to accept itemized returns.  I don’t get much of a refund anymore and every penny goes in the bank for summer living….. still a shortfall of thousands.  Hopefully I will be working full-time again this summer.
  • Speaking of work, my schools will be officially merged next year  with a new name (Saint Paul Music Academy) and they are extending our school day by one hour to help increase achievement.  Not sure what my actual schedule will look like (an hour earlier or later?) but I will be getting an 8% salary increase because of it.  Score!
  • I went to dinner with my bff last weekend and it was great to sit with her and talk for hours.  Really great! I really miss a lot of my girlfriends, feeling lonely for companionship.  Nobody makes much of an effort anymore, including myself and it makes me very sad.  I resolve to make a better effort, hopefully it is reciprocated.
  • I need to start taking more non-food photos.  One of these days when I can miraculously steal some hours I will post all of my favorites from 2010 that were taken with my Nikon D5000.
  • I DID do a photo shoot a few weeks ago for some friends…… an outdoor hockey photo shoot.  It was fun! Will post those this weekend.
  • I think this long winter is making me very unmotivated.  Something is, anyway.  Maybe it is my Vitamin D deficiency? I didn’t make that up.  I had blood tests done a few weeks ago and I am perfectly normal in every way except for the Vit D.  I think my DR should have prescribed a sunny, hot vacation.  That would be awesome if insurance would pay for that! It would definitely improve my health.
  • The Packers beat the Steelers in the Superbowl.  I don’t like either team, I wore Purple all day.  I didn’t really watch the game although I was at a Superbowl gathering.  Didn’t even catch any of the commercials but I did make cream cheese jalapeno wontons from scratch that were delicious.  I will make them again and post the recipe. We also had hamburgers and brats on the grill and brownies for dessert.
  • Anyway, that is all I’ve got for now, I better post this before the draft sits in my dashboard for another two weeks!
Thanks for reading, have a great day ;)

Boy, nothing like having 2 weeks off of work and falling even further behind in blogging!! How does that happen? Well, let’s see:  I was very busy many of the days of my time off and then I got sick the day after Christmas and didn’t feel like doing anything but read.

Soon I will be blogging about all of the following:

  • Mini Trip down to Mystic Lake Casino Spa & Hotel
  • Christmas Day
  • Christmas Night
  • My dad’s birthday
  • New Years Eve
  • Sauer Family Foosball Tourney
  • All the books I have read lately
  • Winning a judgment in Conciliation Court
  • Updated Bleu-cheese Meatloaf Recipe
  • The new business that I am starting

Hopefully I can crack out all 10 posts over the weekend….. stay tuned for a lot more reading here at Mi Vida Ocupada!!

Thanks for reading, have a great day ;)

  • Sick with the third cold/illness since I got that damn flu shot.  NEVER again, I tell you!
  • As I mentioned before, the week started off on a great note with my kindergarteners.  Later in the week we tried making mini-books with fall words and pictures.  Yikes, cutting activities are hard when you have less than 25 minutes! Also had one little boy have an accident which led to a pile of urine on the floor.  Fun times!
  • Speaking of work, the two schools that I work for under one building are going to be officially merging next year.  We are trying to figure out what this will look like.  It is a fun and interesting process to create the new mission and vision of our school, but I know its impossible to make everyone happy.
  • I also had a really good meeting with my principal and the district gifted services program manager this week.  Excited about some new possibilities at my school for next year!
  • Had to work late again several nights this week for the Extended Day Program and ended up missing birthday dinner for my girl Sonja.  Hope you had a good birthday Sony, sorry I couldn’t make it.
  • Went to a really great training on Differentiation with Dr Diane Heacox.  Got a book full of strategies to use!
  • Had breakfast for dinner at least twice this week, also went to the Chinese Buffet one night.
  • Would love to go shopping and get myself some much needed new clothes and shoes but will have to wait until after Christmas.
  • Missing my nieces and nephew.  Hope I get to see them soon!
Thanks for reading, have a great day ;)

Its been a long time since I’ve done a bulleted post but today seems like  a good day for one

  • As of yesterday, I am finally able to eat successfully.  Three days of the icky poo poo really kicked my butt
  • Had a very boring weekend (despite the HOT, gorgeous weather) because I was still sick on Saturday.  Bummed I missed my friend Cassie’s housewarming party
  • Also bummed we never made it up North for a mini-vacay.  This fall weather we’ve been having has been splendid.
  • Read three books over the past few days.  Finally finished A Prayer for Owen Meany (only took me 5-6 weeks!), then read Evermore by Alyson Noel and now almost finished with Magic Bites by Ilona Andrews.  Evermore (Immortals series) was really good.  It reminded me of Twilight in many ways but way BETTER.  Need to get the next few books in that series now!
  • Spent half the day on Sunday cleaning my filthy, germ-infested house.  A clean house feels so nice, doesn’t it!!??
  • Vikings play the NY Jets tonight in Monday Night Football.  My brother Jeff is going to be at the game tonight at the Meadowlands.  Be on the look out in the End Zone for the crazy MN fan wearing the RANDY MOSS jersey.  Woot!
  • Speaking of Randy Moss…… welcome back buddy.  Touchdown!! (Or lets hope?!)
  • Making Sukiyaki tonight for dinner with my neighbors.  Yum!
  • Glad I finally have an appetite again ;)
  • I am working the Extended Day program again this year, which starts tomorrow.  An extra 6 hours of work every week on Tues & Thurs.  Make me some more money Baaaaaby!!! ( sung to the tune of Eazy E)
  • Speaking of work, things are also going really well for the Twin Cities Restaurant blog.  Who ever thought I could turn eating at restaurants into something so successful?  It is definitely growing and getting tons of recognition.  Were you here when I first got the idea back in 2006?? Its fun to look back at my ideas and memories.  I now have five and a half years of my history recorded through this blog!
  • I am also doing a few side-gigs with my camera here and there.  A few friends have asked me to do their portraits and I rarely turn down a chance to get my hustle on.  Better yet…. practice with my camera!!
  • I now have a Fan Page for this blog (Mi Vida Ocupada) on Facebook.  See it at the top of the page? good! Now click “Like” :)
  • Speaking of this blog, I know I am desperately needing to change up the banner and scheme.  Who has the time?? It is much more difficult to make changes here than it was on Typepad because everything is html based.
  • Time for me to head to work because I have a lot to catch up on.  I hate that feeling as much as I hate being sick.

Have a great week everyone!

GO VIKINGS!

Thanks for reading, have a great day ;)

1. What kind of hair(color/cut) have you always wanted but never had the nerve to do it?
Nothing short, that’s for sure! I have had many colors over the years but my hair has always been past my shoulders.  I would love a Hollywood makeover ;)
2. If you haven’t been/or could do it over, where would/did you go on your honeymoon?

Somewhere tropical and romantic

3. What is your dream car?

Little Red Corvette.  Duh!

4. If you would move anywhere in the world where would you go?
Spain

5. What famous lady would you love to be or be bff with?

I would like to look like Brooke Burke and be  friends with someone who would make me laugh all the time

6. What colors did you do or do you want to do for your wedding?

I bet you thought I would say purple, right? Maybe but teal is more like it.  Actually, since I want to get married somewhere tropical, I think I would like stylish floral sundresses (teal, purple, fuschia pattern).  Nothing gaudy.

7. What trashy reality show are you embarrassingly addicted to?I

I can honestly say I have never been addicted to any Reality Show.  I have from time to time watched Kendra or The Girls Next Door or the Kardashian shows, but thats pretty much it.  Oh, and Anna Nicole back in the day.

8. Do you you remember your first kiss? How old were you and how awkward was it?

Isn’t it silly that we remember things like this??!  His initials were EM, it was the summer before 7th grade and it was behind the ice house at a park in Greenhaven.  We met at roller skating through the Park & Rec a week earlier and he totally thought I was his age which was a year older than I actually was.

9. What is your guilty pleasure?
Margaritas.  Food in general (but only because I have plumped up this past year)

10. What is your favorite chick flick?
Geez, I am horrible with remembering movies!

11. What is your favorite beverage?
Water and Margaritas.

12. What is your theme song?
For years it was the Tootsie Roll! LOL. ( I hope everyone who knows me that reads this gets a good laugh, I was famous for this dance back in college!) I would have to go through my ITunes to give a more updated answer to this question.

13. Who is your style icon?

I have never had a style icon.  I march to the beat of my own taste in that regard! I hate shopping and I am not really into fashion so I only buy what I like, don’t really pay much attention to what is hot.

14. When was the last time you cried and why?
I don’t cry very often even though I am very sensitive and emotional.  My feelings get hurt very easily.

15. What playlist/cd is on your CD player/iPod right now?
I never make playlists, all my music is old school

16. What is your favorite dessert?
Ice cream! I love them all but could give everything up except for ice cream!

Thanks for reading, have a great day ;)

This school year has gotten off to a shakey start, to say the least!  My position has not changed with the merger of the two schools, although how I deliver services HAS changed.  No more pull-outs for the Gifted/Talented program, no more giant classroom to call my own.  Instead I am working on a rotational schedule (every ten days), working with students directly in their classes.  This means I will be working in all 30+ classrooms at different times throughout the year.  I have delivered services this way in the past and it is no big deal but  I honestly think I get more accomplished and get to spend more time with my G/T kids when I can pull all from each grade together at one time.

The biggest change to my job this year (and definitely the most challenging!!!) is that I am now in the Specialist rotation for kindergarten and 1st grade.  Our teaching contract gives all teachers a 50 minute preparatory period each day, so during this time the students rotate through our specialists: Science, technology, music, phy ed, and G/T.  Our school needed an extra specialist to cover two periods each afternoon and lucky me (not!) was appointed the job.

I knew teaching kindergarten was a very special job for a very special person but I HAD NO IDEA just how tough it is until I had to experience it on my own!!!! Especially the first few weeks of school.  MANY of our students have never been to school before in their life! No preschool, nothing.  They have no idea what to do!!!! And they are all in kindergarten full-time, all day long, every single day.

Want a peak into what 50 minutes of my day looks like at work??

12:15 Go to kindergarten class #1.  Spend 5 minutes trying to get their attention as 6 little ones all need to go to the bathroom and another 14 who need drinks.  Successfully get the attention of  all but maybe 2-3.  Remind them how good listeners sit, and model it for them.  Try to start a story while Three (or maybe seven?) students roll around on the floor, complaining how tired they are.  Remind them again how to sit criss-cross applesauce with their hands in their lap or on their knees.  Stop story to move a couple of students.  Read a few more lines.  Stop story to remind students we need to face the teacher and that we cannot talk to our friends during story time. Read a few more lines.  Stop story to tell a student that it is not okay to bite others.  Or pull their hair.  Remind students how to sit up.  Check the clock.  Read a few more lines.  Stop story a few hundred more times.

12:38  Half way done! Exhausted yet??  Time to switch classes (we do this only with kindergarten because they are too squirrelly to sit for 50 minutes straight).  Have kindergarten students in class #1 line up.  Model what standing in line looks like.  Check bathroom really quick to make sure I didn’t leave any kids behind.  Make our way down the hall.  Stop three or four times in 50 feet to show students what walking in a line should look like.  Meet kindergarten class #2 on the stairwell, music teacher and I make the switch.

12:43 Begin the process of walking kindergarten class #2 back to their room.  Stop 100 times to get students back in line, or detach them from hanging on the stair railing.  Console crying child.

12:45 Finally make it into room of class #2.  Show students how to sit and be a good listener.  No less than six students are wanting to use the one bathroom all at one time.  Stop a few fights about who is next for the bathroom, then make sure there aren’t kids out in the hall getting a drink.  Try to start story.

1:05 Kindergarten teacher #2 comes back to class and I run as fast as I can to get out of there! LOL

Seriously!  Will I survive this?? It isn’t like I haven’t ever worked with kindergarten before, (testing these kids in December for G/T is a nightmare!!) but I usually only start working with them in MARCH (besides testing) and only with the handful of kids that are identified G/T.  Whole different ballgame there!

Would love to hear from anyone who has taught kindergarten or preschool……… what tricks can I use?? (Besides a special clock to speed up time!).  Books kids this age love to hear for story time?  If you have no tricks for me, maybe you can just sympathize a little? These little ones are stressing me out to the max!!

PS 1st grade has gone soooooooooo much better than kindergarten :)

I told ya I was behind on posting and I nearly forgot to blog about the night a few weeks ago that I drove out to my friend Becky’s beautiful new house.  She had me, Melissa, Angi and Stella  up for dinner and {and a bottle of wine or two!}.  I brought my laptop up with me to show Melissa photos from her wedding.  We had a great time!  The five of us had worked together for the past 3 years but now we all have new positions at other schools .  We are now just one week into the new school year and I miss working with these fun ladies already.

So, I finally made it back home to Minnesota for the long haul.  It has been a whirlwind since I got back.  I arrived home just before 2am on Saturday, got up a few hours later to help MSP shoot the wedding of  Melissa, one of my friends from work (I was just practicing, this was Michelle‘s gig).  I had Sunday off then went back to work bright and early Monday morn.  A workshop for work, actually, and it is pretty fun.

Anyway, I still have a lot of photos to go through, etc before I start another run of blog posts but I had to sneak this one in real quick.  After spending the summer in Texas, I started making a mental note of all the different things I noticed between my home state of MN and my home-away-from home, TX.  Here is that list:

  • The sun rises earlier and stays out much later in St Paul (45′ Latitude) than it does in Austin (30’32″ latitude).  I always knew this but it was so much more obvious this summer while in TX.  The reason being that MN is so much further north and tilted closer to the sun.  I love the longer days and missed it.
  • Students in Texas (probably all over the South) address their teacher as “Miss” or “Mister”……. without attaching their last name to it.  It is not meant to be disrespectful, that is just how it is.  That never happens in MN! It is almost always Ms ____ or Mr _____.
  • Teachers in Texas make FAR LESS than MN teachers.  The salary only increases by $500 a year down there and there is no real raise for having a Masters degree.  In MN you can make anywhere from $4-6k more per year by having a Masters, even more by having up to a PhD.  I would have to work in Texas for 35 years to make what I am making in MN now. (Guess I am glad I teach in MN!)
  • There are a million panhandlers in Austin.  One on every corner, seemed like.  Not as common in the Twin Cities (although they do exist)
  • Everyone listens to country music in TX.  Didn’t hear any heavy metal on the airwaves at all.  Missed it! The jury is still out as to whether country music has grown on me.  Its probably the only genre of music that is not in my repertoire.
  • Minnesotans and Texans each have distinct accents.  Mine was very noticable to many people when I first got down there.  I mean DOOOntcha knOOOOw I am from MinnEsOtAaaaa? but then I started to find myself saying ya’ll in the most Texan of ways. (But what do I know? I am practically hearing impaired. Damn heavy metal) Haven’t heard my accent? Watch an old video blog like this one.  Haven’t done one of these in about a year now.  That was when I broke my old camera.  I still miss that G9
  • Just outside of Austin is the Factory of the most delicious ice cream, Blue Bell.  I adore it with all my heart.  Banana Pudding ice cream? With real bananas and vanilla wafers? Omg,  The homemade Vanilla is pretty amazing too.  You can find pints of it in yummy flavors everywhere you go.  Trouble for ice cream addicts! I swear I only had a few pints total all summer ;)
  • The crickets in Texas are huge and black and they would probably destroy their smaller cousins in Minnesota.  Those buggers are extremely loud and it is not pleasant at all when one finds its way into your hotel air conditioning unit and proceeds to chirp all night long.  Why does that always seem peaceful in the movies? I used to feed crickets to my leopard geckos years ago when I bred them and they didn’t bother me as much.
  • There is road construction absolutely everywhere in MN this summer whereas I experienced only one patch of road construction that I found in Austin.  Bad roads are usually a result of winter weather conditions.

I know there were so many more things I have thought of but since I didn’t write them down, some have escaped my thoughts.  I will add more if I think of them……
